[MGI30-05] Aquifer Characterization Using Fiber Bragg Grating Multi-level Monitoring System
The measurements from different locations are essential to understand site-specific hydrogeological parameters and predict the pathways of plume and remediation agent transport. However, due to the limited budget, the monitoring wells usually place to single depth or is fully penetrated, and the measurements from multiple levels are limited. To address this issue, we develop a new multi-level monitoring system (MLMS) built upon fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technique to collect the multi-depth groundwater levels from the fully screened well in a contaminated site. The capability of this FBG MLMS in the field is examined and validated through collecting the groundwater levels in response to four sequential injections from various depths in the 2-inch wells. Afterward, these multi-level aquifer responses are utilized to delineate the spatial K and Ss distributions. We further compare the estimate with those by depth-averaged water levels. The poor calibrated depth-averaged water levels indicate that the multi-depth discrete groundwater level measurements are necessary to depict the K and Ss distributions in this contaminant site.
