Keywords:Cosmic Rays

We detected Cherenkov light with a handmade cosmic-ray detector so-called "Cosmic Watch". Cherenkov light is observed when cosmic ray goes through the substances which have a large refractive index. In this research, we used acrylic (4 cm * 4 cm * 20 cm). We flattened the surface of the acrylic with some pieces of sandpaper and abrasive to improve the transmission of the Cherenkov light to the photodetector sensor. We covered the acrylic with aluminum foil and black plastic tape to shading and shielding from electrical noise and light leakage. We put another Cosmic Watch with a plastic scintillator on the Cosmic Watch with acrylic and measured signal coincidences to prevent noise detection.

In this research, we succeeded in detecting a Cherenkov light in a certain condition. We would like to optimize for detection of Cherenkov light by changing conditions like material or its size.
