[PCG17-05] JAXA Update for Sustainable Lunar Surface Exploration

★Invited Papers

*筒井 史哉1 (1.宇宙航空研究開発機構)

In October 2019, the Government of Japan (GOJ) made the decision to participate in the Artemis Program, following the announcement of the Program by United States in March 2019. Subsequently, in July 2020, the GOJ Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and NASA Administrator signed a Joint Exploration Declaration of Intent (JEDI) to collaborate lunar exploration. The GOJ and NASA also concluded the agreement regarding the Gateway, lunar orbiting outpost, in December 2020 to build it together.

Looking at the international forum, the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG) currently participated by 26 space agencies worldwide issued the Global Exploration Roadmap Supplement – Lunar Surface Exploration Scenario Update in August 2020. As a chair of ISECG till September 2020, JAXA took initiative to compile this Supplement.

Presently, JAXA is working to develop plans for sustainable exploration on the lunar surface, including participation in the Gateway and considering future human exploration of Mars. These activities are based on the GOJ policies for the Artemis Program, the internationally developed roadmap and as well as the international space exploration scenario developed by JAXA in 2019.
The author will explain the status of space exploration activities described above, focusing on the plans for the Gateway and the lunar surface exploration.
