We physicists usually use methods of vector analysis to calculate physical phenomena such as electromagnetism. However, the vector calculus is not the only way to handle geometrical objects; it is known that J. C. Maxwell has derived Maxwell equation using Hamilton's quaternions.

The vector analysis has become the standard equipment of physicists and quaternions are long forgotten in the 20th century, however, their usefulness in computer graphics is more and more recognized in recent days; they are becoming not only toys for pure mathematicians but also for practical tools for programmers.

In a modern view, quaternions can be derived from the more general theory called geometrical algebra, which will be discussed in the talk with an emphasis on application to plasma physics.
