[SCG40-01] Seismic Hazard Assessment Studies in Uttarakhand Himalaya

*Srinagesh Davuluri1, Suresh Gudapati1, Srinivas Dakuri1 (1.CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute)

Keywords:Uttarakhand Himalaya, Seismicity, Ground Motion Prediction Equations

The seismic Hazard Assessment studies in the Uttarakhand region has been undertaken with the installation of seismological network comprising of 53 Broad band seismographs, 32 Strong Motion Accelerometers and 4 Strong Motion Velocity meters to constrain the seismicity and characterize with the major tectonic features, record ground motion accelerations to characterize the ground motions in Uttarakhand both in terms of the Amplitude, Frequency and compare with the BIS Response spectra. During February 2017 – November 2020, around 700 earthquakes of magnitude ranging from 0.8 to 5.5 have been located. The main features of the seismicity patterns show they cluster both in space and depth. Majority of the earthquakes are coinciding with the Main Himalayan thrust, the interface between the Eurasian and Indian Plates was the locale for the past large earthquakes. Further, the strong motion and Broad band seismograph data past and present has contributed in the deriving the ground motion Prediction equations for this region which is the first of the kind for the continental continental plate collision.
