[SCG42-P01] Model for anomalies in the Love wave dispersion
Keywords:Love wave, dispersion, slip wave
As is well known, there is a sharp change in the shear wave velocities across the interface between the crust and the upper mantle. If welded contact occurs at the interface, Love waves are generated when the earth is excited such as during an earthquake. However, anomalies in the Love wave dispersion have been observed, for example, by Ekström (2011). A model is presented which seems to capture the observed anomalies. In this model, slipping contact is assumed at the crust-mantle interface and a slip-weakening friction law is assumed to hold. When slipping contact occurs, a new type of an interfacial elastic wave, called the slip wave (Ranjith, 2017) can exist. The slip wave is a companion wave to the Love wave. The occurence of slip waves can explain the anomalies in the observed Love wave dispersion.
