[SCG46-P11] A DEM model of uniaxial and triaxial compression test of rocks

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a fundamental simulation method to investigate solid earth dynamics. A simple friction model between the contacting particles is known to simulate the behavior of the sand layer which is the scaled analog model of accretionary prism formation. However, to simulate the mechanical behavior of rocks in such DEM-based geoscience simulation, we have to extend the model to support the bonding model between the particles. Here, we present the parametric study and technique to reproduce the uniaxial and triaxial compression test of rocks sampled in the Hota accretionary complex. Our model based on the ratios of tensile to compressive strength can reproduce essential behaviors of non-linear failure envelopes. We will discuss the role of bonding parameters in the normal and tangential direction in the pre-and post- failure processes.
