[SSS08-13] Experimental evaluation of thermal maturation of carbonaceous materials under hydrous condition: As a proxy of frictional heating in a fault during an earthquake
Keywords:carbonaceous material, IR spectrometry
The thermal maturity of carbonaceous materials (CM) is often used for evaluation of the frictional heat recorded in faults. However, despite the fault is filled with water, the effect of water on the maturity of CM have not yet been investigated. Thus, in order to investigate the reactivity of thermal maturity of CM under hydrous condition, here we vacuum-sealed two types of CM (lignite, bituminous coal) in a glass tube with water and then performed heat treatments. We performed heat treatments with some different conditions of CM-water ratio (dry, 2:1, 1:4), target temperature (350, 700, 1050℃), and heating holding time (40 s, 1, 3, 5 h). The spectroscopic features by IR on the heated CMs with various conditions indicated no difference on the thermal breaking of aromatic C-H. Therefore, the thermal maturation of CM as a proxy for frictional heating in faults is not necessary to consider the presence of water.
