[SSS09-12] Imaging the solar interior using noise tomography

★Invited Papers

Keywords:Noise tomography

Helioseismology is the science of imaging the solar interior using observations of acoustic oscillations at the surface. These waves are stochastically excited by turbulence in the near-surface layers of the Sun, which then traverse the interior and re-emerge at the surface. Much as in terrestrial noise tomography, we measure cross-correlations of the surface wavefield to infer interior properties. Drawing parallels with noise tomography, I will describe the data, methods and the many successes of helioseismology in obtaining constraints on solar interior structure and dynamics.
