In the Nankai Trough, where a future great earthquake would cause a national-scale crisis, recent research results revealed diversity and complexity of earthquake occurrence and slip behavior of the earthquake fault. To prepare for such a great earthquake in the Nankai Trough, this project aims to develop a system to rapidly and accurately evaluate crustal activities and distribute information on the current status of the Nankai Trough, including unusual slip behavior which has never observed previously, based on the latest scientific knowledge and data. Also, to maximize the use of the information, this project will investigate how local governments, communities, industries, etc., should take actions for hazard mitigation, particularly when unusual slip behavior is observed. Furthermore, in cooperation with local governments and other organizations, this project conducts a quantitative evaluation of how this project's research results have contributed to the improvement of hazard mitigation and identify practical research and development items for hazard mitigation plans. To achieve these goals, this project has the following three sub-themes. Generation and distribution of information on crustal activity: In this sub-theme, we construct an integrated 3D model of the Nankai Trough seismogenic zone and develop a system to rapidly process observed earthquake data to for evaluating crustal activities in the Nankai Trough by using the 3D model. We will also reanalyze the past observed data to understand the various seismic activities of the Nankai Trough earthquakes. Generation and distribution of information for hazard mitigation: In this sub-theme, we create an information infrastructure for disaster mitigation of earthquake and tsunami hazards and risks by incorporating a time evolution after a large earthquake or unusual slip behavior is observed. In addition, this sub-theme conducts a comprehensive research for "protecting lives," "protecting regional industrial activities," and "protecting metropolitan functions" by maximizing the use of disaster mitigation information. Hazard mitigation and risk communication: To improve knowledge and skill to use earthquake hazard information, we explore how to effectively use the latest information and knowledge about the earthquake hazard at each stage of pre-, during, and post-disaster response. For this purpose, we examine how to disseminate information to utilize the research results for disaster prevention and mitigation in communities and businesses.
