The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) has been working under the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU; the current ISC) since its establishment in 1957 to promote the development of all the desciplines in ocean science through international cooperation. Until September 2005, the Ocean Science Research Liaison Committee of the Science Council of Japan made a strong commitment to SCOR activities as the national representative in Japan. The SCOR small committee of the International Response Subcommittee (the 20th term) and the Subcommittee for SCOR (from the 21st term on) under the Committee on Earth and Planetary Science took over this important role. The aims of the Subcommittee for SCOR is to embody the international response in line with the philosophy of the new Science Council of Japan so that related academic societies and researchers in Japan can contribute globaly to the promotion of ocean science and the development of human society through the activities of SCOR. In this session, we will introduce SCOR's activities and achievements, as well as future prospects. In the general discussion at the end of the session, we will discuss the promotion of future international activities through the Science Council.
