AGU’s mission, stated in its new strategic plan https://news.agu.org/files/2020/05/Final_AGU_Strategic_Plan_2020_Final.pdf is: To support and inspire a global community of individuals and organizations interested in advancing discovery in Earth and space sciences and its benefit for humanity and the environment. One goal is to: Catalyze discovery and solutions to scientific and societal challenges. A challenge is to align AGU’s and more broadly the Earth and space science research culture to better support these objectives. For AGU, the new plan will mean evolving the AGU membership and affiliation model, developing broader partnership, and developing deeper and new programs that support convergent and solution science built from the strenghtened foundation of discovery science. More broadly, we must have a research culture including rewards, recognition, career trajectories, and more that are mutually supportive of these goals, and not primarily funding support and publications.
