Japan faces many problems between the natural environment and human society, such as climate change, natural disasters and environmental pollution. We must be prepared to face the violence and prepare sufficient disaster prevention and mitigation measures. For that purpose, it is necessary to acquire the "discipline for living on a changing earth" that people living in this disaster-prone country should share through education in fields closely related to nature such as earth science and geography. As a result, each individual will have the ability to prepare for "saving lives" against the threat of nature, and will be able to live in harmony with nature.
There are two important points to acquire this background. One is to strengthen "learning the nature system" in school education. In particular, the perspective of "integration of literature and science" is important for this education. The other is to provide a place for learning during the lifetime. For that objectives, research institutes such as universities, academic societies, and local public organizations cooperate and collaborate, and citizens routinely work together. There should be many places where society can learn about the Earth.
