[U14-P02] Current state of Geoscience education in primary school teacher training courses to obtain a Type II teacher’s license
Keywords:primary school teacher training courses, Type II teacher’s certificate for primary schools, Type II TCPS, RIKA (Natural Science), Geoscience
The purpose of this study is to clarify current state of Geoscience education in teacher training courses in order to obtain a teacher’s license for primary schools or RIKA (natural science) and/or geoscience teachers at secondary schools in Japan. As the first step, I investigated the syllabi and its related system of primary school teacher training courses at junior colleges in Japan which can be obtained a Type II teacher’s certificate for primary schools.
As a result, it was revealed that at least about 50 out of around 2,000 graduates in 2019 school year at these junior colleges became primary school teachers without learning RIKA or geoscience while they were junior college students. Moreover, about half of graduates who obtained its certificate had not learnt RIKA or geoscience while at the junior college.
Therefore, we need to discuss and to adopt opinions as below in order to make a recommendation toward reduce internal problems related to teacher training programmes at junior colleges:
- We should propose that “Type II teacher’s certificate for primary schools” will be limited license such as its for pupils year 1 to 2 class only because there is not subject RIKA on year 1 and 2.
- Subjects which are related to RIKA will be compulsory subjects to obtain “Type II teacher’s certificate for primary schools” at junior colleges.
