Keywords:The Kuroshio, Kuroshio large meander, cold core eddy

JMA provides ocean current analysis and monthly forecasts every 10 days based on observational data and ocean model results. The Agency runs a portal site* to provide information on the Kushiro large meander, including synopses of the latest situation, one-month forecasts and the results of observations conducted by JMA research vessels.
Since the summer of 2017, the Kuroshio has taken a Large Meander (LM) path. As of January 2022, the period of meander event had continued for 4 years and 6 months, which is the second longest since records began in 1965. If LM continues until April 2022, the period of meander event will break the record for the LM from August 1975 to March 1980. This presentation shows the progress of the Kuroshio LM in and after 2021 and some topics including that the cold core eddy separated from the Kuroshio in October 2020, moved westward and was absorbed into the Kuroshio in the southeast of Kyushu in February 2021.
