In the Kirishima volcano area, the "6th Earthquake and Volcano Children's Summer School-Kirishima Volcano's Mystery-" was held in August 2005. After that, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) organized the “Sabo Expedition" for the general peoples. Kirishima Volcanic Area was registered with the Japan Geoparks Network (JGN) in September 2010. At that time, the efforts of the Summer School in 2005 and the continuous educational activities since then were highly evaluated. On January 26, 2011, the major eruption occurred at Shinmoedake, one of the Kirishima Volcanoes. After the eruption, the content of educational programs for children and the general public changed significantly. However, the idea of "learning volcanology at Kirishima" has not changed.
