[HCG29-P03] The functions of extracellular polymeric substances in a terrestrial cyanobacterium, Nostoc sp. HK-01.

The cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) protect their bodies from environmental stresses such as dryness, salt, freezing, and ultraviolet radiation. A terrestrial cyanobacterium, Nostoc sp. HK-01 has some morphologies, and tolerant to space environments such as vacuum, heavy particle beam, gamma ray and ultraviolet radiation. We recently found that some substances related to their growth and differentiation. In this study, we investigated the functions of Nostoc sp. HK-01’s EPS which related to their UVC tolerance, growth and differentiation.
