Springs is important as not only water resources but also places for local community. For instance, there are many local communities formed in relation to springs in agricultural area in Shizuoka Prefecture, some historical festivals and customs on springs continue to be performed now. However, because the number of farmers has decreased, the scale and structure of the local communities has changed, thereby traditional communities have been disappearing. In this study, we examined how the decline of agriculture has affected the use of spring water, further how springs communities have changed. As the result of investigations to 4 communities collected in fieldwork interviews, it is revealed that the sustainability of the local communities varies depending on whether the custom such as rules and cleaning are maintained by only farm families or by all residents.
