University Research Administrator (URA) refers to personnel at universities who vitalize research and reinforce R&D management. Since “Project to Develop a System to Foster and Secure Research Administrators” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan in 2011, the placement of URA at research institutes has progressed, and there are currently about 1,500 URAs in Japan.
URA's main operations cover a wide range of fields, including research capability analysis, research strategy promotion, industry-academia-government collaboration activity support, public relations, outreach, and education, and there are many opportunities for URA to take on public relations. Since becoming a URA belonging to the Graduate School of Environmental Studies (GSES), Tohoku University in 2018, the author has been active mainly in industry-academia-government collaboration and regional cooperation. The author is involved in the research project “Demonstration experiment of hydrogen production from waste aluminum and Tamagawa Hot Spring acid water” entrusted from Senboku City, with which GSES has concluded its 2017 cooperation agreement. To promote the spread of ZEB (net-zero energy building), GSES established the Miyagi ZEB Study Group and held a symposium. Furthermore, GSES are actively participating in the "Miyagi Geothermal Heat Utilization Study Group" established by Miyagi Prefecture to promote the spread of geothermal heat systems in Miyagi Prefecture. Based on the author's URA activities, the importance of public relations by URA and its current issues are introduced.
