[SVC34-10] Promoting inter-disciplinary data utilization and collaboration through the JVDN system and state transition diagrams

The fundamental method of scientifically predicting changes in volcanic activity is to record various volcanic phenomena through surveys and observations, analyze the accumulated records to clarify the mechanisms or trends of activity, and make predictions based on the mechanisms and the latest records. Since this method deals with various volcanic phenomena and approaches, it is difficult for a single research field to carry out the method; instead, research through inter-disciplinary collaboration is necessary. We explain our efforts to promote inter-disciplinary research in order to accurate predict ion.
In order to promote inter-disciplinary research, first, an environment where researchers in any field can access many types of data is required. We have been operating the JVDN system since 2019 to promote data utilization and collaboration, and to contribute to volcanic research and disaster prevention. The JVDN system aggregates data collected by research institutes, universities, and government agencies in Japan, and allows users to view and download the data.
Inter-disciplinary research is research that integrates two or more disciplines. It refers to collaborative research in which researchers work together to solve problems that are difficult to solve in a single field, such as predicting volcanic activity or comprehensively understanding volcanoes, or research in which the results of one research field are applied to another field. Although the JVDN system allows access to data from other fields, most of the data is specialized and difficult for researchers in other fields to handle. Since experts in one field may not be experts in another, in order to promote inter-disciplinary research, data and research results must be in a form that can be used by non-experts. The JVDN system provides processed data and visualized image data so that the data can be handled by researchers in other fields.
To facilitate inter-disciplinary research, we also propose the use of a diagram called the state transition diagram to represent the transition of volcanic activity. A state transition diagram shows the behavior of a system used in system design. Based on the characteristics of changes and anomalies seen in various data, several states of volcanoes are defined, and the transition of volcanic activity is expressed in terms of state transitions. In general, a design diagram is used to share information when experts from different fields collaborate to create a product or develop a system. The design diagrams can be understood by both experts and non-experts, regardless of the field, and can be used for inter-disciplinary research on problems related to the prediction of activity trends by representing volcanic activity trends in design diagrams. State transition diagrams can also be used for comparative studies between volcanoes. By comparing the state transition diagrams, it is possible to identify the common characteristics of volcanoes, and to predict the transition of volcanic activity based on the common characteristics.
