In Japan, "Promotion of the National Plan for the Prediction of Volcanic Eruption" was proposed to the relevant ministers by the Dr. Takeshi Nagata, the chairman of the Geoscience Council in 1973, in order to respond to the growing social demand for the practical application of volcanic eruption prediction, and to expand and improve the system for more accurate and more quantitative volcanic eruption prediction.
The content of the proposed plan consists of six items, one of which is the following items related to the Coordinating Committee for Prediction of Volcanic Eruptions (CCPVE): "The committee constantly exchanges information on observational research regarding volcanic eruption prediction and makes a comprehensive assessment." CCPVE has been set up at the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA); it has been making comprehensive assessments on volcanic activity in Japan on a regular or occasional basis, and disseminating volcanic information in order to contribute to the mitigation of volcanic disasters. Regular meetings of CCPVE have been held 149 times so far.
Currently, volcanic activities are assessed regularly or whenever volcanic activity changes, by JMA institutionally, which is responsible for eruption warnings. CCPVE carries out the comprehensive evaluation of volcanic activity including mid-to-long term activity in consideration of the knowledge and opinion of researchers, and gives advice to the assessment by JMA. Based on the improvement of monitoring system and evaluation ability of JMA, and on the circumstances of universities in recent years, the role and mission of CCPVE should now be reconsidered.
In this presentation, we will first explain the volcanic activity assessment system in Japan by CCPVE, then review the past and current status of volcanic activity assessment, and finally, would like to describe the future of the system for assessment of volcanic activities in Japan.
