The International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD2022) was adopted at the United Nation General Assembly on 2 December 2021. IYBSSD will officially start on 30 June 2022 and end on 30 June 2023. It was mobilized by international scientific community under the auspices of UNESCO, including those in earth and planetary sciences such as IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics), IGU (International Geographical Union), IMA (International Mineralogical Association) and SCOR (Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research).

The UN resolution was motivated with the “high value of humankind of basic sciences” and with the fact that “enhanced global awareness of, and increased education in, the basic sciences is vital to attain sustainable development and to improve the quality of life for people all over the world”. The UN invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nation System and other global, regional and subregional organizations, as well as other relevant stakeholders, including academia, civil society, inter alia, international and national non-governmental organizations, individual and the private sector, to observe and raise awareness of the importance of basic sciences for sustainable development, in accordance with national priorities” It mentioned that the global fight against the COVID-10 pandemic is a reminder of importance of the basic sciences.

In Japan, Science Council of Japan sent a support letter of this activity, and formed coordination committee to promote domestic activities. The committee designed Japanese version of IYBSSD logo, and is planning to hold academic forum and symposia during the IYBSSD 2022. It also requested cooperation of academic societies; they can register as cooperative organization at the SCJ website and can use the logo for their events such as symposium.
