[U01-05] An action plan of JpGU for next-generation SDGs in geosciences

In Japan, the SDGs have become a very familiar term in the past year, and now everyone knows it. Citizens appear to be beginning to act in line with the SDGs philosophy. Geosciences as a basic science is important in the sense that it provides the knowledge of humankind that supports the foundation of SDGs, and its responsibility is great. Scientists should pursue the acquisition of cutting-edge knowledge, and at the same time, contribute to disseminating the obtained knowledge to society and linking it to action. On the other hand, while the present SDGs focuses on action, the importance of understanding profound mechanisms such as the relationship between human activities and natural phenomena such as climate change is not necessarily fully emphasized. Based on this background, JpGU would like to promote actions as an academic society and at the same time deepen discussions on the concept of post-SDGs.
