Shortly after World War II, Japan was in the process of recovery and there were few job opportunities for talented young scientists. Quite a few of them chose to go abroad. Syukuro Manabe was one of them and his achievements in climate modeling are well known and have become even better known thanks to the Nobel Award. Akio Arakawa was also in this exodus and is another legend in climate modeling. Manabe and Arakawa worked in many aspects of climate modeling, eg, parameterization of convective clouds, but their approaches were quite contrasting; Manabe prefers simple, straightforward, but essential approaches while Arakawa tends to emphasize preciseness and logical consistency. In this short talk, the author would like to pick up a few examples and compare and contrast their styles and try to argue that both of their approaches have virtues and that they point to important aspects of climate system science and climate process modeling. If time permits, the author would like to introduce the progress of climate modeling in Japan in recent years, which has received their scent.
