As signs of an end to the COVID-19 pandemic become increasingly noticeable, the number of foreign tourists coming to Japan is on the increase. Meanwhile, in Turkey, an earthquake that resulted in the deaths of more than 30,000 people occurred on February 6, 2023. The need for universally comprehensible disaster prevention signs and education on disaster prevention seem to be more urgent than ever.
Disaster prevention signs need to convey information and instructions to victims instantly, in addition to being readily visible. The authors of this paper have continued developing more concise pictograms that show actions to be taken in the event of a disaster. Additionally, they have striven to improve the design of the pictograms so that victims’ behavior indicators can be consolidated given space limitations.
In this study, a questionnaire on the simplification of disaster prevention education pictograms and the amount of information they convey was administered to both international and Japanese students
The study attempts to optimize the simplification and comprehensibility of pictograms used in disaster prevention as well as the information content used in education for disaster prevention.
