[HCG23-P09] A flood evaluation of urban greening for global climate change adaptation
Keywords:urban greening, urban flooding
Climate change and rapid urbanization all over the world are increasing the risk of urban flooding. The hydrologic performance of urban greening “retention” can be effective to mitigate the risk. We evaluated the performance in various cities around the world by using a hydrological model. We found that the deeper substrates of urban greening have more effective retention rates, but thinner substrates such as green roofs can still provide reasonable performance. The model showed that the retention is higher in arid areas but greening in these regions needs careful management to prevent the plants from wilting. Our results can provide scientific basis of urban greening as flood control measures for climate change adaptation.
