I will explain this session's purpose using my "footprint" as material for my activities as a geographer and now as a pedagogue.
It is said that ontogeny repeats phylogeny. How did we researchers encounter research and science, and through these encounters, have we come into contact with society? It is possible to be a researcher or a scientist without having direct contact with society. However, there is a big difference between being in contact with society as a researcher after becoming a researcher and becoming a researcher while being in contact with society.
I took geography as my major in a small lecture system and received social science-related training in graduate school. It may be possible to remain a geographer, but at the same time, it is a prerequisite for a researcher to consider how to situate their research and activities in a broader context when confronting society and the university to which he or she belongs.
