Yonaguni Island, the westernmost island of Japan, has three island-building myths, one of which is the myth of the great tsunami called "Nagama Suni" (Ikema, 2013). In this presentation, we will discuss whether this legend is fact or fiction from both humanistic and scientific perspectives, and understand its meaning.
