Introduction.
The UNESCO Global Geoparks programme recommends that local communities develop sustainably through a comprehensive approach to conservation, education and use (UNESCO, 2015). The key for local resident to sustainably develop is understanding the importance of conservation and education. Education is an effective and best way of promoting these understanding.
In order to develop sustainably, various environmental education programmes are conducted in national parks, their base facilities (visitor centres) and NPOs. Establishing and operating a system like theirs is one of the sustainable developments that can be achieved through a bottom-up approach, which is the ideal of a Geopark.
The Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark area would like to develop sustainably through that the ideal bottom-up approach. One of the ideal way is to derive the message of the Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark, and to have the residents proactively understand the importance of the balance between conservation, education and use. For this purpose, we promote understanding of the 'relations between humans and nature' (appropriate conservation and use) by using supplementary textbook.
Aims of the preparation and distribution of the supplementary textbook.
Since 2017, the we have been producing the Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark Science Supplementary Textbook(hereinafter referred to as the 'supplementary textbook') with earth science experts and primary school teachers in Kagoshima City as members of the editorial board. After merged Aira and Tarumizu City in the Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark area, teachers from two City has been added to the editorial board, and revisions have continued.
Evaluation of supplementary textbook
A questionnaire survey was conducted on the utilisation of supplementary textbook. Free descriptions were extracted as part of the evaluation. By limiting the area locally, the supplementary textbook was not only used in science classes, but was also used for field works and so on. Based on the results of the questionnaire, we hope that the children will learn about appropriate conservation and usage methods as a result of what they have learnt from the supplementary textbook.
Effects of the revision of the supplementary textbook and future plans
The contents to be published have been changed step by step since 2019. In 2021, the design was renewed according to the Visual Identity (VI) manual for the Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark (Fukushima, 2016; Volcanological Society of Japan).
The usage of 2021 edition increased to 80% from that of 2020 edition was 60%. As a result, the message of the Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark was widely and effectively communicated. Furthermore, in 2022, QR code were printed in the supplementary textbook to enable access to our message; in 2022, the usage of the supplementary textbook reached 100% for the first time.
With each revision, the utilisation and satisfaction have been increased: the revision of the supplementary textbook in 2022 made it possible to provide our message using QR codes. From 2023, messages on conservation will be added as soon as possible.

The Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark has been continuously preparing and distributing science supplementary textbooks for sixth-year primary school students since 2017. In 2021, the usage of the supplementary textbook increased due to the renewal of the design, and in 2022, the usage of the supplementary textbook will be increased due to the addition of a QR code. In 2022, the usage increased further by posting QR codes. The distribution of electronic versions will further improve convenience. In the future, through the creation and distribution of supplementary textbook, we incorporate mechanisms to raise awareness of the importance of conservation and protection of local resources
