[U12-P05] The Journal of the Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources
The Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources (JSHWR) is an academic society that emphasizes interdisciplinary and comprehensive research for the development of hydrology and water resource studies. Established in March 1988, it was intended to promote the exchange of researchers and engineers from academia, government, and the private sector in Japan, and to support international exchange, cooperation, and contribution. In addition to basic research undertaken to promote creative and leading research, JSHWR also specifically evaluates the development of new technologies with a view to their application to practical problems.
Since the first issue of the journal was published in December 1988, its pages have been characterized by diverse contents, including in each issue not only research papers but also prefaces by leading researchers and essays by young and mid-career researchers. Many members look forward to reading these contents in each issue. Currently, volume 36 has been published, with plans to publish four issues annually. Manuscripts of many types are accepted for publication, including reports of original research, research notes, review articles, and commentaries (Type A manuscripts), which are subject to peer-review processes, and technical and research reports, editorials and reviews, and discussions and comments (Type B manuscripts), which are not subject to peer-review processes. The publication fee varies slightly depending on the type of paper, but is set at no charge as long as a contributed work does not exceed a certain number of pages. To encourage contributions from students and members over 60 years old, the application criterion of the publication fee waiver is wider than that for general members, which is a distinctive feature.
The Journal contents such as prefaces, original research papers, and research notes are also available using the J-Stage platform. As a rule, the contents become ‘Open Access’ at six months after of publication. Since April 2022, papers have become available to the public immediately as ‘Early View’ contents, with an additional cost. About a year has passed since the start of the Early View service. Most authors have chosen to publish immediately, indicating high demand for Open Access. Early View also provides an opportunity to access the latest research results without having to wait for the journal to be published, thereby compensating for some of the weaknesses of the journal's regular publication.
As future plans, we hope to improve the journal quality by scrutinizing and changing the manuscript types and hastening the peer review process to meet the needs of authors better. In addition, through publication of the journal, we would like to contribute to the revitalization of the JSHWR and the development of research fields by identifying research needs, returning research results to society, and promoting international research exchanges.
