Research on the relationship between landslides and geology is being conducted at the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), as part of the “Development and use of geological information for slope hazard risk assessment." Since the alteration of rocks into alteration and clay minerals due to geothermal heat or hot springs (geothermal alteration) is considered to be one of the causes of landslides, the distribution of alteration and clay minerals in outcrops would provide important information for the causes of landslides and slope hazard risk assessment. In this case, a rapid and efficient method for determining the distribution of alteration and clay minerals in outcrops is required from a practical point of view. To this end, we have conducted field hyperspectral measurements in hydrothermal alteration areas using FieldSpec, and spectroscopic measurements of samples collected from outcrops using laboratory FTIR. Based on the accumulation of a reference library of spectra, we will develop rapid and efficient methods to determine the distribution of alteration and clay minerals in outcrop using hyperspectral data. In this presentation, we introduce a case study of observation and analysis using hyperspectral data in hydrothermal alteration areas conducted in 2023.
