[MGI30-08] Wave height detection at embankment utilizing optical flow of visual footage

*Kazutaka Kikuta1, Ken T. Murata1 (1.National Institute of Information and Communications Technology)

Keywords:optical flow, visual IoT, overtopping wave

We propose a wave height detection method using a moving object detection algorithm based on visual IoT technology. Visual IoT offers the advantage of capturing high-resolution and high-temporal-resolution images. Our system utilizes commercially available IP cameras, which are cost-effective and provide excellent performance. The system will continuously monitor the embankment, enabling image processing on both the edge and cloud sides. In this research, we evaluate the movement of optical flow vectors obtained from video frames to accurately detect the wave height. By extracting the highly active regions, we can effectively identify the bulk movement of the wave and reduce false detections from other moving objects.
