Children's Summer School on Seismology, Volcanology, and Geology is a workshop designed for children to discover the landscapes and dynamics of Earth's activities through outdoor activities, fieldwork, and experiments, led by researchers. This summer school is organized by the Seismological Society of Japan, the Volcanological Society of Japan, and the Geological Society of Japan. The annual executive committees include these societies and local counterparts such as geoparks.
In recent years, the summer school has focused on not only guiding children by researchers but also training leaders involved in disaster prevention and earth science education. The programs, materials, and experimental tools developed for the summer school can become significant educational resources contributing to the local community. The preparation process for summer school involves grownups from the local community working with researchers, allowing wide generations to learn together and positively influence each other.
Moreover, the summer school offers a platform for grownups and children to collaborate in thinking about lifestyle, disaster prevention, and local specialties in their region. It creates a chance to connect local non-profit organizations, administration, civic groups, and education stakeholders. The last summer school was held in cooperation with the Hiratsuka Disaster Prevention Town Planning Citizens' Association. Thus, the hosting of the summer school not only has educational benefits for children but also contributes to the formation of the local community.
