There were two stages of human migration to the Pacific world: the Ice Age migration from Sundaland to Sahul Oyiriku (Australia + New Guinea Island) 50,000-60,000 years ago, and the migration of Austronesian groups from Taiwan to South-East Asia and Oceania, which began about 5 000 years ago. In the second phase, human groups migrated from Melanesia to western Polynesia as the Lapita pottery group 3000 years ago, but ceased migration. The latest archaeological dating indicates that the migration began again 1000 years ago. Why did humans stop migrating for nearly 2000 years and then start again? This talk will review the latest results from archaeology and genetics, simulation studies of migration, issues of environmental cognition and wayfinding capacity, and the relationship with climate change.
