Digital Deep-sea Typical Habitats" (in short, Digital DEPTH) was submitted to UN Decade of Ocean Council by China Deep Ocean Affairs Administration (CDOAA) and was the only program approved by the Council in 2023. The main objectives of the Digital Depth are to 1) develop and deploy the state-of-the-art in-situ observation systems via more cruises; 2) develop habitat mapping and numerical simulation techniques to reveal the cross-habitat connectivity in multiple scales; 3) generate digital deep-sea habitat atlas; and 4) exchange the knowledge and experience on deep-sea science and management.

To be a true international collaborative program, we need active participation of international communities of deep-sea research. To facilitate such a collaboration, CDOAA has provided seeding fund to support two international joint research cruises in 2024 and 2025. With intensive discussions among deep-sea communities, we have decided to study deep-sea seamounts in the Northwest Pacific region in 2024 and deep-sea vents in the northwest Indian Ocean in 2025. With active participations of marine scientists from > 20 countries (>90% from developed countries), we have assembled a scientific team for drafting 2024 cruise plan and would like to see even more. broader participation in 2025 cruise planning process. In this presentation, I will briefly introduce the Digital DEPTH but more importantly, collect your input on priority areas of scientific research program, joint research cruises, capacity building under the Digital DEPTH, and explore the possible collaborative opportunities (such as international cruises, data and sample sharing and so on).
