In 1641, Tokugawa Iemitsu (16041651) restricted the trading port in Japan to the Dejima trading post in Nagasaki, and the previously open Hirado trading post (now in Hirado, Nagasaki) was closed. As a result, some of the employees of the trading post were reassigned to other East India Company trading posts in Nagasaki and other cities, while others returned to their home countries. One of the latter was Carel Hartzing (1611-1667). He married in Hirado a local wife (name unknown). In November 1641, he left Japan and returned to his native Germany with his wife and two young siblings. Peter Hartzing (1637-1680), the subject of this presentation, was Karel's eldest son. In 1667, at the age of 30, he was appointed to the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (Kurfürstentum Braunschweig-Lüneburg) as a mining engineer. He was then the Chief Mining Engineer of the Clausthal region. In particular, he dealt with the problem of groundwater that constantly seeped into the mine shafts during mine excavations. He was responsible for the project to return seepage water to the surface using windmills and water wheels.
During the author's research of 17th century mining documents at the Klausthal Mine Archives, he was able to find several official documents concerning watermills and windmills that were submitted by Haltzing to the local mining authorities.
This plan was submitted to the local mining authorities. This plan is a historical document that gives us an insight into the history of mine drainage projects in the Clausthal region at that time. This presentation will focus on the outline of the plan for the installation of the windmill prepared by Haltzing in September 1670. This paper will focus on the outline of the plan for the installation of the windmill, which was prepared by Haltzing in September 1670.
