Keywords:terrestrial cyanobacteria, revegetation, nitrogen fixation, organic matter production, coexisting fungi

We have been working to elucidate the ecology and functions of terrestrial cyanobacteria as a means of revegetation in degraded areas such as deserts. We will introduce the characteristics of terrestrial cyanobacteria isolated from soils in Japan and overseas, such as nitrogen fixation activity, biomass growth rate, salt tolerance, and production of exopolysaccharides, and their possible use in revegetation. We will also delve deeper into the characteristics and functions of filamentous fungus-like microorganisms that coexist with the isolated strains. Furthermore, we will mention the potential of terrestrial cyanobacteria for soil creation in order to apply them to exo-ecosystems.
