The Japan Society of Geoinformatics was founded in April 1990 with 740 incorporators. From the foundation to present, “Geology” has been used for the Society name in Japanese, because initial motivation of the Society was solving the problems related to "Geological Data and Information". Before and around the foundation year, geological data processing was in the early stage due to limited performance of computers and peripheral devices. After that, computers have developed dramatically in both hardware and software, high-performance equipment has gotten smaller and easier to use, and computer processing of geological information has become common in both the fields of Earth science and engineering. Under such major changes, to review the identity mission of the Society, create new goals, and take action for the next development have become an urgent task. In addition, the information environment and research areas, objects, and methods have changed significantly. From the beginning, the Society has covered a wide range of academic fields of science, engineering, and sociology by interdisciplinary ways, not limited to Geology in a narrow sense.
To align the Society name in English (Geoinformatics) with the actual activities of the Society, further expand the scope of research and accelerate the fusion of different fields, and increase the number of members, especially young people, from many fields, the Society has decided to change “Geology” to “Earth” in the Japanese name. This Japanese name change aims to gain a deeper understanding of the Earth phenomena through an informatics approach, appeal development of Society’s own methods, discover new Earth phenomena and elucidate their mechanisms and formation processes, expand local information to global information, deepen information collection and analysis, and improve social contributions to natural resources, environments, disaster prevention, etc.
This Society has developed and applied advanced methods to many scientific and technical issues such as Expert system, GIS, Remote sensing, Data interpolation and extrapolation, Geostatistics, and Machine learning and recently extended targets to Planetary science. It is expected that the new Japan Society of Geoinformatics can be a core of interdisciplinary researches of all Earth- and Space-related informatics.
