Keywords:2025 Myanmar Earthquake, Sagaing Fault, Damage, Ground Motion
The Myanmar earthquake, which occurred at 12:50 local time on Friday, March 28, 2025, started the ruptured near Mandalay, the second largest city of Myanmar, which is located in the central Myanmar. The source fault was the Sagaing fault, which runs 1,200 km north-south in the center of Myanmar and is estimated to have ruptured for a length of approximately 400 to 500 km of the fault. This earthquake caused severe damage in many places along the Sagaing fault, including Mandalay, Sagaing, and the new capital Nay Pye Taw. Unfortunately, it is currently very difficult to investigate the area on-site, so in this presentation, the overview of the damage based on photos and videos shared on the Internet (mainly on SNS) will be summarized. In relation to this, the ground motion estimation for a hypothetical earthquake occurring on the Sagaing fault will be introduced, which was assumed before the earthquake occurred.
