More than 30 years have passed since the Japan Geoscience Union (JGU) was established to advance the study of earth and planetary sciences under a collaboration by about 50 related academic societies (10,000 members). Publication of an academic journal as well as "having annual meetings" is one of the two main JpGU's activities. In 2014, we launched the journal of Progress in Earth and Planetary Science (PEPS) in order to (1) establish an international first-class journal and (2) generate sufficient financial revenue from it. The evaluation indexes of the academic journals by PEPS are now almost comparable to those of the journals published by AGU (American Geophysical Union) and EGU (European Geoscience Union) although the publication number is unfortunately much less. The goal of the financial aspect on the journal has not been achieved. The major challenges for the future for the promotion of PEPS are to increase the number of publications, the number of the submission by foreign authors, and the income from the publication of academic journals.
