Pt-loaded molybdenum suboxide catalyst shows a high catalytic activity in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction to produce methanol, in which oxygen vacancy sites created during H2 pretreatment has been believed to play an important role for achieving high activity and selectivity. In this study, we performed in-situ XAFS analysis and DFT calculations to track the reaction mechanism and clarified that the oxygen vacancy acts as an active site for deoxygenation of CO2 to produce CO intermediate.
