[Abstract]
[Objective]
The aging process is known to affect the stomatognathic system; it may result in disruption of the masticatory function, swallowing, and malnutrition which leads to oral frailty. Masticatory performance is one of the aspects evaluated in oral hypofunction assessment.1 This scoping review aims to evaluate the effect of denture adhesive on masticatory performance to identify how denture adhesive may improve masticatory performance in denture wearers.
[Method]
A literature search was conducted utilizing digital databases from 3 different sources: PubMed, EBSCO, and Scopus; and 1 manual search. “Masticatory performance, complete denture, denture adhesive, and elderly” are the keywords utilized in the searches. The literature search included articles that had been published between 2018 and 2023, be clinical research on humans, and be written in English.
[Results and Discussion]
Eight articles from 3 database resources and 1 manual search based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria (English articles from 2018-2023 that evaluate the effect of denture adhesive on masticatory performance in complete denture wearers) are reviewed. The use of denture adhesive in previous denture intended to maintain masticatory performance immediately and temporarily before the new complete denture fabricated. Denture adhesive acts as an aid to help patients adapt to the newly fabricated complete denture, especially in patients with neuromuscular and psychological problems, and it is found that denture adhesives may improve and maintain masticatory performance.2 However, the use of denture adhesive must be under the supervision of a dentist. Because, even though it is intended as a mass release product, denture wearers often do not understand the main purpose, dosage of use, and side effects of careless use of it.3
