What We Need to Do to Make Data Work for the Society

During the COVID-19 disaster, the inexperience of the national and local governments in using information technology has become clear. At the same time, many public transport companies especially local bus companies in Japan are starting to publish their schedule data as open data. Although the primary motivation is to improve the availability of their services on a smartphone application, we can say that it is a chance to realize data-driven operation and policy making of public transportation.
In this lecture, I will introduce the history of open data in the bus industry and discuss how to promote digital transformation (DX) in a non-IT-friendly industry. I will also discuss how we can transform the administration of public transport by the national and local government to utilize the open data. Since COVID-19 drastically reduces public transportation users, making more efficient operations in public transportation is important as well as thinking about how public transportation should be after COVID-19. Through this lecture, I will encourage researchers working with social data to be involved in changing our society to utilize AI and data science/engineering more effectively.
