[3H1-GS-3d-01] Ontology development for building a knowledge base in the life science and structuring knowledge for elucidating the COVID-19 mechanism

In life science, the development of ontologies is active for knowledge sharing. However, for themes with little knowledge accumulation, knowledge systematization with consistency is a challenging task. Thus, it might lead to difficulty in knowledge interoperability. This work aims to systematically define new knowledge and build a knowledge base accumulated on existing knowledge and new knowledge. In this work, firstly, we focus on homeostasis maintenance and its imbalance, which is the center of life activities. We develop a Homeostasis Imbalance Process ontology (HoIP). This ontology refers to the upper ontology and specializes the terms into the homeostasis imbalance-dependent for consistent systematization across life science domains. Next, we accumulate new knowledge about COVID-19 on our ontology. It is essential to explain a series of infection processes from a wide range of expertise for elucidating the COVID-19 mechanisms. We organize the homeostatic balance/imbalance processes of COVID-19 viral action and biological defense. Furthermore, to reduce the risk of aggravation, we try to integrate knowledge related to existing ontology such as vaccines.
