[2N6-OS-7b-03] On the moral responsibility in ethics of dialogue systems

philosophical investigation from "props" perspective

What kind of moral responsibilities must designers take when developing dialogue systems? In this paper, we investigate how can designers evaluate their systems in terms of ethical perspective. Taking the emotional responses of users into consideration is important in developing dialogue systems and some researchers have developed a “relational turn” approach in which they recognize technological artifacts as moral agents in some sense. However, this approach is problematic in terms of attribution of moral responsibility. On the other hand, Mizukami proposed a “prop theory” that explains the moral status of social agents based on Walton’s philosophy. In this paper, we consider the practical implications of this perspective for the ethical design of dialogue systems. In particular, we point out that it is difficult for designers to be responsible for all of the users’ imaginative activities. We then consider how we can evaluate imaginative activities that occur more naturally.
