[4A1-GS-6-04] Design and implementation of a program for drawing a stratum from qualitative representation

This report describes an algorithm for drawing a cross-sectional map of a geologic formation from a given symbolic expression.
The goal of this research is to give a symbolic representation to the geologic formation by qualitatively capturing its structure, and to provide a mechanism to reason about the global geologic structure and its formation process based on this representation.
The authors have modeled the cross-section of a simple fold strata extracted by a rectangle form, and proposed a corresponding qualitative symbolic representation. This representation focuses on the shape of the boundaries between adjacent layers and the location of the end points of the boundaries, without using precise numerical values. In this report, given an arbitrary symbolic expression, we construct an algorithm that judges its drawability, and if it is drawable, that determines an appropriate coordinates and draws it. We implemented this algorithm and applied it to all possible symbolic expressions with up to four layers, and obtained corresponding figures for all expressions judged drawable. In addition, we extend the algorithm so that we can treat the geological structure that has angular unconformity.
This program can clarify the correspondence with the figure when reasoning on symbolic representation is conducted.
