[4K1-GS-9-02] Two-dimensional display-based proteus effect on muscle activity level

〇Tomoaki Kurata1, Masayoshi Kanoh1 (1. Chukyo University)

Keywords:Proteus effect, Avatar

The Proteus effect refers to the psychological and physical changes that occur when an individual perceives an avatar as a substitute for themselves in a VR environment. In our previous study, we showed that utilizing not only the VR space but also an avatar projected on a two-dimensional display reduced subjective fatigue during squatting exercises. In this paper, we investigate whether physical fatigue during squatting exercises changes in addition to subjective fatigue by measuring surface electromyography. As a result, the subjective fatigue levels were significantly lower in the muscular avatar condition than in the other conditions. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in physical fatigue among the conditions. These results suggest that incorporating a muscular avatar reduces subjective fatigue and maintains training effectiveness.
