With the consideration of recycling resources and environmental protection, waste sorting is seeing a strong and increasing social need in our daily life. However, a strict implementation on waste sorting could be very difficult, given this is a complex and tedious task, and it is highly dependent on residents’ self-discipline. In addition, a better implementation of waste sorting is usually related to external motivation, e.g. proper incentives. This study aims to develop a smartphone application in the form of gamified interaction to improve residents’ motivation and efficiency in waste sorting through both cooperation and competition. This research is believed to cultivate an active and positive environment for daily waste sorting by both cooperation and competition in the communities. For the residents in the same community, this approach will further improve the teamwork spirit, while for residents from different communities, positive competition will stimulate the ambition to perform better. With residents having a more proactive and positive attitude to waste sorting, a better and more sustainable future for the waste sorting development is expected.
