New fluorinated benzothienoisoindigo (F-BTIDG) unit for organic solar cells (OPV) was designed and coupled with benzobisthiazole (BBTz) and terthiophene (3Th). The bandgaps of F-BTIDG copolymers were from 1.36 to 1.46 eV, which as well as their HOMOs are suitable as p-type materials for n-type fullerene derivatives. The orientation of 3Th-F-BTIDG was dramatically changed from face-on to edge-on by introducing fluorine.
