Platinum (Pt) nanoparticles having high electrocatalytic activity and durability for an oxygen reduction reaction have been required for applications to polymer electrolyte fuel cells. We prepared the Pt nanoparticles on an Ar-ion-irradiated glassy carbon (GC) substrate, discussed the influence of the introduced lattice defects in GC on the chemical and catalytic properties of the Pt nanoparticles.
